You guys know I'm always saying food is medicine! Oil of oregano as well as garlic are both as potent as antibiotics. Here's some pretty impressive proof. A 1,000-year-old 9th century medieval ‘eye salve’ has been shown to wipe out 90 percent of methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. MRSA is a problem in hospitals as it is more and more resistant to the scope of antibiotics that we have available today. What is the most remarkable part of this story, however, is that this ancient recipe works better than modern antibiotics in both lab & mouse models.
The recipe was originally found in Bald’s Leechbook, an old English manuscript held by the British Library.
"We thought that Bald’s eye salve might show a small amount of antibiotic activity. ... But we were absolutely blown away by just how effective the combination of ingredients was," stated Freya Harrison, the lead researcher.
To test the efficacy of the salve recipe, they even went as far a gathering wine made at the same 9th century vineyard and then brought the salve back to the lab for rigorous testing. They even tested the ingredients separately for strength and bacteriocidal killing activity. Remarkably, and only when the ingredients were used altogether, the eye salve killed 90% of MRSA bacteria. It even displayed the same killing efficacy when the MRSA formed biofilms (which are bacterial colonies that forms walls impenetrable to antibiotics). Even in vivo, in mice, the salve killed off nearly all bacteria in 24 hours. (Better than modern antibiotics that also destroy beneficial gut bacteria that are crucial to your immunity and overall wellness).
Watch out vegans-This recipe does use bile salts from a cow's stomach but one cannot ignore its success especially when used in dire situations.
From BBC:
